都市住宅を設計する際、やはり街や自然といった外部環境との接し方に興味があります。郊外であれば周辺環境となじませ存分に自然を享受するといったつくり方もよいと思いますが都市ではやや距離を置いたほうが快適に生活できそうです。ここでは都市ならでは距離感を探ってみます。

敷地は東京の下町に位置し、タウンハウスが並ぶ一画という設定です。裏には運河が流れています。両隣の建物の屋根と壁のラインに揃えて上部と二階の側面を細かい穴の開いたアルミ製のパンチングメタルで覆いました。いきなり硬い材料で囲い込んでしまうのではなくまず空気に網をかけやわらかく光を捕まえるようなイメージです。内側には雨が落ち風も吹き込み自然環境に近い状態です。ここにガラスのバスルームと透明なアクリル製のテラスを設けました。日中は内側のほうが暗く外からは内部を見通せないので視線を気にすることなく快適に過ごせます。

住宅の主要部は一階にあり、屋根は透明な素材でつくられここには水を張ることができます。透明な丸いテラスは水盤に浮島のように点在します。水は抜くこともでき、上部のパンチングメタルとあわせてこれらがフィルターとなり光の量を調整します。また風でゆれる水が室内に光の変化をもたらすというおもしろさもあります。ある程度閉じられた住宅ならではの光との付き合い方が発見できそうです。

一階は室内の有効寸法で4.6m×15.8mという広さです。15.8mの長さはそのままに、巾を1.6m, 1.2m, 1.8mという細長い三つの空間に分割しました。間仕切りはやはりアルミ製のパンチングメタルでつくられています。一部の天井にも使用してあります。全体を見ると部屋が分かれているような、大きなワンルームのようなどちらともとれる空間です。都市住宅という限られた床面積の中で、物を配置したり作業したりといった実用性に対してはコンパクトな部屋幅でも対応できるような気がします。たとえば1.6mの幅があれば調理作業には支障がなさそうです。1.2mあれば朝食のための小さなテーブルは置けそうです。1.8mあればベッドを置いたりテレビを見たりすることができそうです。ただ視覚的な広がりがないと圧迫感を感じてしまうので間仕切りは適度に透明感のあるものにします。

またこの建築では収納をつくりません。収納も置き家具を利用し、それらはインテリアの一部として存在感を発揮します。パンチングメタルの間仕切越しに見える家具類はぼんやりした形や色で室内風景になじみ、自然光の中でも夜の照明の中でも美しく見えるはずです。

一階にはキッチンが設置されていますがそのほかの部分はどこがリビングルームでどこが寝室でといった用途を設定していません。生活する人のイマジネーションにゆだねられます。ここでの生活はどこにいても例えばそこがベッドの上であってもリビングルームのようにくつろげる、そんなイメージのものです。

　The project title is “House in Tokyo”.

　When I design a house in the urban context, I am interested in contact to the outer environment. If the house is in the suburban area, it is possible to merge the house into the surrounding settings but in the city it seems more comfortable to have certain distance from the outside. This is the starting point of this project ? the search for the sense of distance.

　The site is located in one corner of townhouses in downtown, Tokyo. The behind the site is a canal. The roof and the upper floor is aligned with the neighbors and covered with the aluminum punched metal which softly brings the light into the house not shutting off it with hard and solid material. So that the rain falls into the house and the wind blows in there. It is pretty close to natural environment. Glass-walled bathroom and clear acrylic terrace are there on the upper floor. In the daytime, inside of the house is darker so it cannot be seen from outside.

　The main functions of the house are on the ground floor. The ceiling is made out of transparent material and can become a pond. The clear round acrylic terraces float on the water like islands. This pond and the punched aluminum become a filter which controls the amount of the light. It is also fun to see the water creating the ripples and it changes the light quality. It is close enough to enjoy the natural elements but also closed enough to see the uniquely-happening events created by them.

　The ground floor is 4.6m x 15.8m. The space is divided into 3 long spaces: 1.6m-, 1.2m-, and 1.8m-wide. The wall is also made out of punched aluminum. The part of the ceiling is also aluminum. As a whole, it can be understood as one big room or skinny several rooms. I think in the limited floor area of the urban residential projects, the compact width of room can be an interesting and usable device to install furniture and occupy. For example, 1.6m-width is enough to cook, 1.2m-width is enough for a coffee table, and 1.8m is enough to place a bed and TV. Only one thing I have to pay attention is just visibility; the punched aluminum allows the visual clearance.

　This house doesn’t have built-in closets or storage. It needs to be furnitured, but even those pieces show the existence as part of the house when they are seen through the punched metal and become interior scenery under the natural light and artificial light in the nighttime.

　The kitchen is set on the ground floor but except that there is not clear designation for certain activities. It is up to the inhabitants’ imagination. The lifestyle in this house is free like anywhere can be comfortable like a living room even it is on the bed.
